Viktor-Kortschnoi-Memorial
The endorsed FIDE Academy " Jussupow Schachschule" organises with the support of the DSB, the Thuringian Chess Federation, the Schachstiftung GK gGmbH and the ELG in 2023 a round robin tournament with the possibility to achieve GM and IM norms.
Our tournament is dedicated to the memory of this outstanding grandmaster. We want to give young chess players the opportunity to compete with grandmasters.

The tournament will be played in a round robin system. The experienced grandmasters Michal Krasenkow from Poland, Stelios Halkias from Greece, Igor Khenkin from Germany and Anatoli Vaisser from France will take part in the tournament. These prominent chess players have repeatedly won national and international tournaments and need no special introduction. Their opponents will be 6 young chess players. We can already name 5 names: IM Fabian Bänziger and FM Noah Fecker are from Switzerland, Germany is represented by WGM Josefine Heinemann, FM Tobias Kölle and Moritz Weishäutel.

Viktor Lvovich was one of my chess idols, so hosting this tournament also has a personal meaning for me. The picture by our friend Hartmut Metz shows our joint analysis after the Leko - Korchnoi game at the Olympiad in Dresden 2008. I appear here as the coach of the Swiss team, but you can see from the picture that the role of an attentive student suits me better...

The international master from Switzerland Gabriel Gaehwiler completes the field of participants in the tournament. Gabriel belongs to the group of six aspirants for the higher title. The young chess players will be put to a tough test by the grandmasters.
All the grandmasters taking part in the Memorial have an excellent tournament record. The two-time Polish champion Michal Krasenkow, for example, has also won a number of major international events and was one of the ten best chess players in the world.
Igor Khenkin played for the German national team for many years and became national champion in 2011.
Stelios Halkias has played successfully for the Greek national team for many years and is well known to Bavarian chess fans through his performances in the traditional tournaments in Bad Wiessee and Bad Wörishofen.
We are particularly pleased about the participation of Anatoli Vaisser, 1997 French Champion and four-time World Senior Champion, who also played a tough match against Viktor Kortschnoi in 2011 that ended in a draw.

At the German Youth Championships in Willingen, our referees Hans Brugger and Nadja Jussupow are helping the children to give their best in these important competitions. The drawing of lots for the Kortschnoi Memorial took place there under the direction of the chief arbiter. The young chess player Anna Heidtkamp acted as the lucky fairy and ensured that the first round will be very exciting.
